YouTube for Android is reportedly testing the ability for users to set custom thumbnails for their created playlists.
The feature is also rumored to have specific dimension requirements for images, and failing to meet these requirements may result in upload failure.
According to a report, YouTube may soon enable users to upload thumbnails for custom playlists they create. Currently, the video-streaming platform allows users to upload thumbnails for their videos, but this feature isn’t available for playlists. This might change soon, as an APK teardown of the YouTube for Android beta app suggests the addition of an option to upload thumbnails for playlists on Android devices.
Thumbnails for playlists
In a report by Android Authority, it was revealed that a code hinting at a new feature allowing users to upload thumbnails for playlists was discovered. This was found during an APK teardown of the YouTube for Android beta app version 9.26.33. The code includes a reference to “CustomThumbnailCreationActivity”, suggesting the potential ability to create custom thumbnails for playlists.
Additionally, the report mentions strings for “upload failure”, indicating users may need to try again. The feature is also speculated to have dimension requirements, with one of the strings pointing out that small dimensions could be a reason for the upload failure of the thumbnail image.

Currently, users can upload custom thumbnails for individual videos on YouTube for Android, but not for playlists. The playlist thumbnail is typically derived from the first video in the playlist, and while it can be changed to another video, custom thumbnails cannot be uploaded. This new feature could allow for greater customization, enabling users to set any image as the playlist thumbnail, rather than being limited to the thumbnails of the videos within the playlist.
Sleep timer on YouTube
The video streaming platform is reportedly developing a sleep timer for its Android app. This feature would allow users to set a timer for video playback, which would automatically stop once the timer ends. Additionally, the sleep timer may appear as a notification on the smartphone’s home screen.
The feature was discovered during an APK teardown of YouTube for Android version 19.25.33. While YouTube Music already has this functionality, it is speculated that the sleep timer feature will soon be available in the main YouTube app as well.
