The upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air from Apple is rumored to come equipped with an LCD panel similar to the one found in the 5th generation iPad Air model.

Earlier reports suggested that Apple planned to outfit the alleged 12.9-inch iPad Air with a Mini-LED display, utilizing excess panels from the iPad Pro lineup.

Apple is anticipated to unveil a refreshed iPad Air lineup with two different screen sizes during its upcoming launch event next month. Alongside these new models, the event may also see the introduction of updated iPad Pro models featuring OLED displays. However, recent revelations from an analyst suggest a departure from earlier expectations.

Previously, it was speculated that Apple would upgrade the display technology of the larger iPad Air variant by repurposing leftover panels from the iPad Pro lineup. However, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) CEO and Co-Founder Ross Young, this may not be the case anymore. Young now suggests that both the 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Air models will retain IPS LCD screens, similar to their predecessor, the 5th generation iPad Air.

This update contradicts Young’s earlier prediction of a Mini-LED screen for the 12.9-inch iPad Air, sourced from excess panels of the iPad Pro. Instead, the decision to stick with IPS LCD displays is attributed to concerns over the high costs associated with upgrading the panel technology.

Following Young’s earlier forecast, Apple has revealed plans to host an event titled ‘Let loose’ on May 7, during which it is anticipated to unveil fresh iPad Pro and iPad Air iterations. Additionally, there are speculations that the Cupertino-based company will introduce an updated Apple Pencil featuring new ‘squeeze’ gestures. It’s rumored that this stylus will also offer the ability to track its location using Apple’s Find My network. Interestingly, the event’s promotional artwork showcases an Apple Pencil encircled by vibrant colors within the confines of the company’s logo.

Young suggests that rather than repurposing its surplus Mini-LED panels for the speculated 12.9-inch iPad Air variant, Apple could unveil a different iPad later in the year. The specific model, whether it will be an iPad Pro or an iPad Air, remains undisclosed for now. According to the analyst, Apple is anticipated to release this new model in the fourth quarter of 2024.
