Reports: The AI capabilities of iPhones might prioritize speed over power compared to ChatGPT and Gemini
According to the report, Apple is expected to focus on developing AI features that operate entirely on its devices, including smartphones and other products.
Apple is heavily rumored to unveil its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event in June 2024. A recent report suggests that the company may adopt an innovative approach to integrate AI features into its iPhone and other devices, departing from the chatbot-style features seen in Samsung’s Galaxy AI and Oppo. This shift in strategy comes as Apple aims to offer a suite of on-device AI features, potentially sacrificing some power for faster performance compared to its competitors.
According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter on Bloomberg, Apple is preparing to showcase its AI strategy in a unique manner. Instead of emphasizing chatbots like ChatGPT, Copilot, or Gemini, which provide conversational access to AI tools, Apple aims to demonstrate how AI technology can enhance users’ daily lives. The company intends to highlight the integration of AI into various aspects of everyday tasks.
For decades, Apple has been incorporating predictive machine-learning algorithms into its core features, such as Siri, the Photos app, and the recently launched Personal Voices. It is speculated that Apple may introduce generative AI features through an intuitive interface, where AI operates seamlessly in the background without requiring explicit user commands.
Despite having grand ambitions, one potential challenge that Apple may face is its decision to adopt an ‘on-device’ approach for AI implementation. The report suggests that Apple plans to keep AI features operating locally on the device rather than relying on cloud-based solutions for privacy reasons. While this approach will likely enhance the speed of the features, there is a downside. Due to the limitations of the device’s hardware, these features may not be as robust as those offered by competitors.
