The company purportedly has already acquired the domain and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates for the website, essential for website authentication. If accurate, this move would position OpenAI to compete directly with major players like Google Search, Microsoft Bing, and Perplexity AI, which also boasts its own AI search engine.
The information surfaced from a community post on Y Combinator’s Hacker News, stating, “Search.chatgpt.com domain and SSL cert have been created.” The post, authored by a user with the handle daolf, garnered 127 upvotes at the time of publication. While the user has a history of sharing news articles on the forum, no leaks or rumors were found in their posting history. While this lends credibility to the information, its authenticity remains uncertain.
Nevertheless, several AI influencers have begun discussing a ChatGPT-powered search engine on social media. For instance, tipster @nonmayorpete shared details about the speculated search engine on X (formerly Twitter), even suggesting a potential launch date of May 9.
