According to a report, Samsung is considering enhancing its built-in voice assistant, Bixby, by integrating generative artificial intelligence features. Bixby was introduced by Samsung in 2017 as a replacement for its S Voice assistant alongside the release of the Samsung Galaxy S8 series. Since then, Samsung users have had the option to use Bixby instead of Google Assistant as their default voice assistant. A Samsung executive has now indicated plans to enhance Bixby’s capabilities by incorporating AI features to make it more intelligent.
Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Mobile Business, Won-joon Choi, discussed the importance of redefining Bixby’s role in an interview with CNBC. He stated, “Bixby has been a key voice assistant for Samsung, not only for mobile devices but also for TVs and digital appliances within Samsung’s ecosystem. It has been the core voice assistant thus far.” Bixby competes with other voice assistants such as Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, and Google Assistant.
Choi emphasized the need to leverage AI and large language models (LLMs) to enhance Bixby’s intelligence further. He expressed, “With the emergence of generative AI and LLM (large language model) technology, I believe that we have to redefine the role of Bixby, so that Bixby could be equipped with generative AI and become even smarter in the future.” Additionally, he suggested that AI could facilitate more natural conversations with users and introduce a new interface to support other Samsung ecosystem products.
Although the report did not specify the features slated for addition to Bixby, Google recently enabled users to employ its Gemini AI as an assistant on Android smartphones. This voice assistant is capable of answering calls, snoozing alarms, and conducting basic Google searches to provide responses to queries.
Furthermore, it undertakes complex functions like launching applications, activating the flashlight, managing smart home devices, and beyond. Moreover, it has the capability to generate content, propose travel itineraries, assist in preparing recipes using ingredients available at home, and handle all other tasks typically performed by AI chatbots.
