Apple is developing a solution to streamline the transition from an iPhone to an Android device. The company has released a new document outlining the modifications it has implemented, including enabling support for alternative app stores and permitting third-party browsers to utilize their own browser engines in compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). Additionally, Apple has revealed its intentions to introduce additional interoperability features, such as the ability to uninstall the Safari browser, transfer data across various browsers, and more.

Apple outlined its adherence to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in a 12-page document, showcasing the strides it has taken and forthcoming features. Among these, the most significant is a migration solution designed to facilitate a seamless transition from an iPhone to an Android device. According to the document, “Apple is working on a solution to assist mobile operating system providers in creating more user-friendly methods to transfer data from an iPhone to a non-Apple phone.” This functionality is slated for release in the latter half of 2025.

Another forthcoming capability for iPhone users is the ability to uninstall the Safari browser entirely. Apple has already granted users the option to remove pre-installed apps from the Home Screen. “Apple also intends to empower users to completely remove Safari from iOS, if they desire. Apple aims to implement this feature by the conclusion of 2024.”

Significantly, Apple’s Safari browser is powered by its native browser engine, WebKit. All third-party browsers available in the App Store must utilize WebKit as their foundation to develop their applications, resulting in a similarity in appearance and functionality to Safari. This intricacy is why allowing users to uninstall Safari presents a challenge for Apple compared to other comparable applications, contributing to the extended timeline for its implementation.

Moreover, Apple is developing a browser-switching solution aimed at providing great convenience for users interested in experimenting with new browsers but hesitant to lose their saved bookmarks, passwords, and site data. According to the company, “Apple is working on a browser switching solution to export and import pertinent browser data between different browsers on the same device.” This functionality is expected to roll out by the end of 2024 or early 2025.
