Netflix to End Support for Older Apple TV Models Next Month: Report
Netflix reportedly states that this decision is aimed at ensuring viewers have the “best possible viewing experience.”
According to reports on Reddit, Netflix, the widely-used video streaming service, is considering discontinuing support for older Apple TV models. Users on the platform have shared receiving emails from Netflix regarding the “sunsetting support” for various older-generation models. Instead, the focus is said to shift towards newer models, offering the latest features like redesigned icons and an updated home screen, both introduced recently.
No Netflix on older Apple TV models
On the Apple TV subreddit, a user posted a screenshot showing an email purportedly from Netflix, announcing the cessation of support for older Apple TV models. According to the information provided, Netflix will discontinue support for Apple TV (2nd generation) and Apple TV (3rd generation) beginning July 31.
The email stated, “You’re receiving this email because you’ve used Apple TV (2nd generation) and/or Apple TV (3rd generation) with Netflix previously. Unfortunately, we’re discontinuing support for these devices on July 31, 2024.”

Netflix states that this decision is aimed at ensuring viewers have the “best possible viewing experience.” One user speculated below the post, suggesting that it could potentially lead to a complete shutdown. They said, “I would assume it’s a complete shutdown, as I think the ‘apps’ for these generations of Apple TV are simply web apps either hosted by Apple or just the launch icons/URLs on the home screen are hosted by Apple.”
List of Obsolete devices
All of the Apple devices that Netflix is discontinuing support for have already been classified as “obsolete” by Apple, according to its official support page. Apple designates this term for devices whose distribution ceased more than seven years ago. For such products, Apple does not provide hardware servicing, and service providers cannot request parts for repairs.
The Apple TV (2nd generation) was released in September 2010 and offered viewing in up to 720p resolution. Conversely, the Apple TV (3rd generation) was introduced in 2012, featuring an A5 chip and supporting content streaming at up to 1080p resolution.
Notably, both devices ran on an early version of iOS instead of tvOS, which was introduced later in 2015 with support for third-party applications.
