Report suggests that Microsoft may soon unveil its MAI-1 AI model, which boasts 500 billion parameters.

According to the report, Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, leads the MAI-1 AI model project.

Reportedly, Microsoft is developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) model called MAI-1, potentially its largest in-house model yet. Recently, the company established its AI division, now led by Mustafa Suleyman, former CEO of Inflection AI and co-founder of Google DeepMind. Suleyman is said to be overseeing the development of this significant language model, which may be unveiled soon. Microsoft had unveiled its open-source small language model (SLM) Phi-3-mini last month, succeeding the Phi-2 model.

According to sources cited by The Information, the MAI-1 AI model is in advanced stages of development, though its specific purpose remains undetermined pending final capabilities. The project is reportedly led by Suleyman. It’s speculated that Microsoft might showcase the AI model at its annual developer-focused event, Microsoft Build, starting May 21.

Allegedly, the MAI-1 AI model boasts 500 billion parameters, making it Microsoft’s largest language model to date. For context, the Phi-3-mini model had 3.8 billion parameters, while GPT-4 boasts one trillion parameters. A higher parameter count expands the knowledge base of an AI model, enhancing its contextual understanding. As MAI-3 has yet to be released, there are no benchmark scores available for comparing its performance to top models.

According to the report, Microsoft developed the MAI-1 AI model internally rather than acquiring it from Inflection AI. However, it’s possible that the model was trained using data from the startup. It remains uncertain whether the MAI-1 AI model will follow the open-source approach like Phi-3-mini or require a subscription fee for access. Microsoft may also integrate it into its own AI products. Further details are expected to be revealed during the company’s Build event later this month.

According to reports, OpenAI is independently developing a search engine powered by ChatGPT and has already established a domain and SSL certificate for its inaugural search product. Speculation indicates that the search engine might be unveiled on May 9.
