A bug affecting Apple ID accounts has resulted in some users being locked out of their accounts, prompting them to reset their passwords.
As of now, Apple’s system status webpage does not show any reported issues impacting its services.
According to numerous user reports on social media platforms, Apple users are encountering an issue with their Apple ID, which is causing them to be locked out of their own accounts. Some users claim they were logged out from one or more devices and prompted to change their Apple ID password, while others remain unaffected by the bug. It appears that resetting an Apple ID password resolves the issue for affected users, allowing them to regain access to their accounts.

Initially reported by 9to5Mac, the Apple ID password reset bug seems to be impacting multiple users, who have shared their experiences on various social media platforms. A staff member from Gadgets 360 also experienced this issue when their Apple ID was logged out from both their iPhone and iPad, followed by a request to reset their account password.
In a blog post, Mac software developer Michael Tsai shared his encounter, describing how his iPhone initially requested his Apple ID password and then notified him of his account being locked. The password reset process proved to be complex due to his enabled Stolen Device Protection feature. Despite encountering some bugs along the way, Tsai successfully reset his password without experiencing any significant delays using his Mac.
Likewise, developer Dave Wood mentioned in a Mastodon post that he received a notification indicating that his Apple ID was locked. A screenshot accompanying the post showed a pop-up message stating that the account was locked “for security reasons,” with two options: “Unlock account” and “Cancel.” Similar to Tsai, Wood was also instructed to wait for an hour due to the activation of Apple’s new Stolen Device Protection feature on his phone. Numerous other users have also recounted their experiences on Threads, X (formerly Twitter), and Mastodon.

As of the publication of this story, there were no reported or recent problems impacting any of Apple’s services, including Apple ID and iCloud Account and Sign In, according to the company’s system status webpage. Apple has not yet provided any explanation for why some users are experiencing this issue. We have contacted the company for comment and will update this story upon receiving a response.
